  About the Book

Dr. Mara Maxwell is having a crappy day. She’s covering an extra shift at the hospital, it’s a full moon bringing out all the crazies, and the senior doctor is mysteriously sneaking out with medical supplies. Too curious for her own good, she follows the doctor to the hospital’s basement. Waking in a cage wasn’t in her plans, but that’s not the worst part. Now she’s…growling.

Xeon Pearse, alpha wolf for the Lumberton pack, is trying to find his missing sister and pack mates. When he gets a phone call from a stranger who tells him she knows where his wolves are, he and his beta Kyro jump into action. The instant Xeon and Mara meet, he knows she’s meant for him. But Kyro’s certain she’s meant for him too.

Together, during the day, the trio hunts down the monster playing Frankenstein to find out what he did to Mara. At night though, she’s dealing with two men loving her and multiple forces trying to take over her mind. It will take both alpha and beta to save their mate from herself. But they’ll need Mara to help control the monsters before they destroy everything in their path, including her.

  —For my readers,

I love all things Halloween and this story is going to go perfectly with my favorite holiday. Enjoy!

  Chapter One

Dr. Mara Maxwell sat at the nurse’s station, updating a few of her patients’ charts on a busy night. Every month on the full moon, the hospital filled up with careless people who needed medical attention. It was like someone let all the crazies out for the night. The closer it got to Halloween, the more people showed up with injuries from falls while hanging decorations. Even being a smaller sister hospital to Gavin Memorial, they still had their fair share of patients.

Mara covered her mouth and let out a soft yawn. It’d been a long shift, and she still had a few hours to go. She’d worked a double since Dr. Phenix decided halfway through his shift that he had more important things to do. When the nurses couldn’t get him on the phone, they called her.

The loud blaring of a television sounded from the patient’s room next to the nurse’s station. A recap of the news played. Mara paused when the anchorman reported another shifter had gone missing. That was the fourth person this month. A woman disappeared last week.

It had touched a nerve when she saw the picture of a young woman flash across the screen the day after being reported missing. She still hadn’t been found. The squeal of a witch’s laugh snapped her out of her thoughts. For crying out loud! Her heart thudded a million miles per hour, and she cursed under her breath. The motion-activated Halloween decoration went off every time someone walked by.

“Dr. Maxwell,” Mara heard Sarah, one of the nurses call out. “You’re being called on by the patient in 304. He swears his leg’s going to fall off and insists that a doctor look at it.”

“I swear that man’s going to drive me crazy.” With a sigh, she closed the file she’d been working on. “I’ll grab some bandages and put his mind at ease.”

“You want some help?” Sarah offered, her smile sympathetic.

“No, I’ve got it,” she sighed. “You can finish your rounds. You know if you’re late with meds, 311 will be buzzing you non-stop.”

“You’re right,” Sarah rolled her eyes. “Needy people.”

When Sarah headed down the hall with her cart, Mara went to the supply room for bandages and wrapping; and maybe a painkiller to shut up patient 304’s whiny ass. She would have to give him a lesson on wasting resources. The supply room door slung open when she reached for the doorknob; Dr. Phenix nearly plowed her over on his way out.

“Whoa,” Mara caught herself on the door jamb before she went down. “Where have you been?”

  “I had a meeting.”

“In the supply room?” she asked with a chuckle, finding what he said ridiculous.

“No. Of course not,” he said in a snippy, irritating tone. “There’s much more to running a hospital than tending to patients. That’s why I hired you, remember?”

She frowned at his continued attitude. “Yes, but you don’t just go missing halfway through your shift. If we’d known you had meetings, there would’ve been coverage for you.”

He narrowed his gaze at her. “It ran late,” he snapped and glanced at his watch. “I have to go.” He nudged past her and rushed down the hall as if he were late for another meeting. Like they had meetings day and night at that place. He must have been up to something and was using a meeting as an excuse.

Rolling her eyes, she walked into the supply room. One of the cabinet drawers was ajar like someone was in too much of a hurry to close it properly. She popped her head out the door and glanced down the hallway in time to see Dr. Phenix get into the elevator.

Curiosity got the best of her. She wanted to know where he kept disappearing to. After the elevator closed, she rushed down the hall to see where he took the supplies. She watched each number light up as the elevator descended. It didn’t stop until it reached the basement levels.

“Basement one? What the hell are you doing down there?” Mara spoke to herself, tempted to get in the elevator and follow him down. The basements were used for storage, mostly old beds and out of date machines. Was she seriously standing there debating following the doctor?

She grumbled about needing to stop her conspiracy theories. The doctor was probably taking naps down there. It was time to go back to work and stop wasting time. She turned back and continued the task she’d set out to do.

In the supply room, shelves were in disarray. Mara had been in the room an hour ago, and nothing was out of place. After a quick browse of the supplies, she concluded that IV lines, syringes, and electrodes were missing. There was no way th
at many could have been used in the last hour.

Dr. Phenix must have had them tucked in his lab coat. Her curiosity was beyond piqued at this point. Why would he need all of those? Taking out her keys, she unlocked the medicine cold storage. Three vials of Sodium Thiopental were missing from the second shelf. Locking the cabinet back up, she grabbed her supplies and walked out of the room. She’d figure out what was going on, but first, she had a patient to tend to.

After spending long minutes reassuring her patient that his leg would be fine and wrapping it back up, she was free to figure out what the good doctor was up to in the basement. It wouldn’t do any good to report the missing supplies. Dr. Phenix practically ran the hospital and could take what he wanted.

“Sarah, have you seen Dr. Phenix?” Mara asked the nurse when she reached the nurse’s station.

“Not since this morning when he walked out.” She frowned. “Why? Is he here? Have you talked to him?”

“No, just wondering.” She didn’t want anyone getting inquisitive, so she covered for him. “I’m going to take my break now. If you need me, call.”

Sarah waved her off. “I just finished my rounds, and everyone has their meds, so we shouldn’t have any issues. Enjoy your break.”

Showtime. She really needed a hobby and to stop thinking that Dr. Phenix was in the basement seducing nurses. Or maybe he had orgies set up. Ugh, thinking of the scrawny man naked was almost enough to turn her nosy butt around. She laughed at her own thoughts.

Trying to appear calm, she hurried down the hall to the elevator. She stepped inside and pressed the button for basement level one. Only then did she realize she needed a card or security code to access that level. Of which, she had neither. The only passcode she knew of, was for rare meds they kept under lock and key. Dr. Phenix had her pull some bottles once and gave her his code.

What were the chances that the doctor used the same code for more than one thing? She punched the numbers in the keypad and pushed the elevator button once again. The cab descended.

She’d never been down there before, never had a reason to. Anxiously, she waited for the elevator to stop.

The door slid open, and she peered down the hall before exiting the elevator. The basement didn’t look like she expected. There were no storage boxes or old equipment. The long hallway had doors on both sides. A set of silver double doors were at the end.

Mara made her way down the hall and peeked into the small windows on the doors. The rooms appeared to be set up like the hospital rooms upstairs. It didn’t make any sense to her. They didn’t use the basement for patient care. The fifth room wasn’t empty.

A woman lay on the bed, restrained. Holy fuck. That wasn’t good at all. She tried to turn the doorknob but it wouldn’t budge. The woman was locked in and restrained. That was breaking all kinds of hospital laws. Not to mention it was probably illegal. The woman lay on the bed, asleep or sedated. She couldn’t tell which.

Mara stared at the woman. Her wavy hair draped over her shoulders. She had a dark spot near her right temple. From a distance, it looked like a small strawberry. Mara recognized her from the news report of the missing woman last week. Why is there a shifter restrained in the hospital?

Someone shouted from down the hall. A different voice. Someone else screamed, but it was quickly muffled as if something covered their mouth. Then all fell silent.

With a bad twist in her gut, she checked the other rooms. The doors were locked, and a few of the beds were occupied. She couldn’t tell if the men in the beds were the missing shifters that had been reported. By the time she reached the silver double doors, she’d counted four people in the rooms. All tied down and behind locked doors.

She pulled out her cell phone, she had to call someone. The police? Something had to be done. A quick glance at her screen, and she wanted to scream. No service. It was like a bad scene from a scary movie.

She heard two men talking on the other side of the double doors. They weren’t coming closer, or at least their voices weren’t getting louder. Mara eased the door open slightly and peeked through the crack. A heavy curtain hung between her and them. Pushing the door open a little more, she was able to get a better view. Two men stood over a patient lying on a surgical table.

“He’s got good genes. He’ll make a fine specimen.”

  Mara recognized Dr. Phenix’s voice.

“Are we adding to it?” the smaller man asked from beside him.

“We’ll harvest first. Haven’t you been paying attention? There’s a process to follow,” Dr. Phenix snapped with obvious irritation.

  “Yes, doctor.”

Mara eased herself away from the door. She’d seen enough to know this shit wasn’t right or legal. These patients obviously didn’t sign up to be here. She needed to get these people out of here. Since she couldn’t call for help, she was going to get help. She quickly spun around, hurrying to the elevator. On the way, her shoe squeaked on the tile floor like sneakers on a basketball court. It made a noise so loud it immediately made her nauseous.

Panic surged through her as she rushed the rest of the way to the elevator. Surely, they heard her shoe noise. When she reached the elevator, she jabbed the button ten times, hoping it would open faster. The moment it did, she jumped inside and pressed herself against the wall out of sight. She heard the footsteps coming down the hall, but she wasn’t about to look out to see who it was.

After repeatedly punching the number button for her floor, she held her finger pressed on the close door button. She prayed for it to hurry. Close, close, please close. Thankfully, the door slid shut just before the men made it to the elevator. Thank fuck. She sagged against the wall and continued trying to beg her phone to pick up service, but nothing happened.

On the way to the third level, she finally got a signal but debated between calling the police or the local shifter pack. If shifters were involved, it might be a little too much for the police to handle. Since she didn’t have the alpha’s number, she needed to look up the recent news reports on the web. They had listed a number to call with information.

Sliding into her chair, she rolled over to the desktop set up in the cubicle corner. She was typing frantically, the article popped up just as the elevator doors opened. Not wanting to be heard, she punched the number into her phone but decided to wait until she got to her office before making the call. She noted how low her battery was in the red. Shit. She hadn’t charged it when the hospital called her to fill in for Dr. Phenix.

“Dr. Phenix is looking for you,” Sarah said.

“He’s here?” She looked behind her, expecting him to walk up to her any second.

“No, I literally just got off the phone with him.”

“I’ll call him when I get to my office.” She tried to keep her emotions in check. Fuck! Did he know she was snooping?

Mara went into her office and locked the door behind her. Her hand shook as she tapped the dial icon. Just as the phone started ringing, someone walked slowly by her door. Whoever it was didn’t stop or try to come in.

  Chapter Two

Everyone talked amongst themselves as they sat around the meeting room. They’d just gotten back from a pack run. Xeon observed them for a minute. Two of his pack mates had gone missing in the last month. He’d called a meeting after another shifter, not in his pack, had disappeared. Shifters of different species were vanishing without a trace too. Something had to be done.

He searched high and low for his sister, Trina. He hadn’t seen or heard from her in a week. No evidence existed of her being taken, but she wouldn’t just disappear. It wasn’t like her to go a day without at least calling him. Add in the fact that other shifters in the area were missing, and it was clear something happened.

“Attention,” he called out above the noisy pack. Everyone stopped talking and looked at him. “I called this urgent meeting because we have a problem within the community. In light of the new missing shifters, I’m in full belief that someone’s taking the
m. You must be vigilant when you leave the compound. Travel in groups or at least in pairs. Report anyone you see that’s suspicious.”

“We haven’t gone out since Trina went missing.” Elena pointed to herself and her best friend, Isabel.

“I would prefer all our women stayed home. Though, I know that’s not possible for those with jobs outside the compound. Travel in pairs, and you should be fine. No one goes out alone until we find out who is doing this and stop them.”

“Are we still having the pack’s Halloween party?” Isabel peeked from the other side of Elena.

“Let’s just focus on finding our pack mates.” Xeon could not believe they were worried about the party. To be honest, if Trina were here, that’s where her mind would be too.

“What are you doing to find them?” Old man Harry asked from the back of the room.

“I’m working with the police, so we’ll be included if they find any leads. Meanwhile, I have a small team out searching for any trace of them, but without having a bonded mate, it’s nearly impossible.”

“Nearly?” Colby asked with a brow arched.

“We’re doing everything we can possibly do. I’m determined to find them. Just remember to travel in pairs, keep your eyes open, and watch each other’s back.” Xeon stood and looked at everyone in the room. “I know it’s been a long day, and many of you are tired after searching. I won’t keep you any longer. Meeting adjourned.”
